As 2012 comes to a close, we’re looking back at some of the year’s policy milestones, including legislation President Obama signed this summer that stopped student loan interest rates from doubling for more than 7 million students.

Yesterday, President Obama
pardoned Cobbler, the National Thanksgiving Turkey. This year marked the
first time the American people cast their vote via the White House Facebook
page to decide which of two turkeys would receive the honor (though
both received a pardon).
In
between the Black Friday sales and the Cyber Monday deals is Small Business
Saturday (November 24th) – a day set aside to support the small businesses that
play a vital role in creating jobs and economic opportunities all across the
country.
Yesterday, President Obamatraveled to Staten Islandto promise residents his
support as they begin the long process of rebuilding their devastated community
just two weeks after Hurricane Sandy tore its path of destruction through the
New York City borough.
Speaking to local
residents, first responders, and elected officials, the President promised that
he would return to the region again and again, until the rebuilding is
complete.

This week, the President invited fourteen middle-class Americans to stand with
him as he spoke on next steps for our continued economic recovery, marked
Veteran's Day with service members, veterans, and their families at Arlington
National Cemetery, held a news conference in the East Room, and traveled to New
York to continue to work on recovery efforts from Hurricane Sandy.

as Team Rubicon use skills acquired in the military to assist people affected
by the storm. Team Rubicon was formed by two former Marines following the
Haitian earthquake in 2010.

Weekly
Address: Recovering and Rebuilding after the Storm
In
this week’s address, President Obama thanks the brave first responders and
National Guardsmen for their tireless work following one of the worst storms in
our nation’s history, and reassures the millions of Americans affected by
Hurricane Sandy that their country will be there for them during the long road
to recovery.
Sunday: President Obama traveled to the Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) head-quarters in Washington D.C. to meet with FEMA
Administrator Craig Fugate, FEMA Deputy Administrator Richard Serino, and the
FEMA regional directors, to ensure federal resources were pre-positioned and
plans were in place to support state and local response efforts.
Tuesday
afternoon, the President traveled to the U.S. Red Cross headquarters
in Washington D.C. to provide updates on federal efforts to assist with the
recovery and cleanup of Hurricane Sandy. He made clear that there was no excuse
for inaction, and for federal agencies to do what is necessary to get people
the help they need as quickly as possible:
There
are places like Newark, New Jersey, for example, where you’ve got 80, 90
percent of the people without power. We can't have a situation where that lasts
for days on end. And so my instructions to the federal agency has been, do not
figure out why we can't do something; I want you to figure out how we do something.
I want you to cut through red tape. I want you to cut through bureaucracy.
There’s no excuse for inaction at this point. I want every agency to lean
forward and to make sure that we are getting the resources where they need --
where they're needed as quickly as possible.
And
when you see folks like that respond with strength and resilience, when you see
neighbors helping neighbors, then you're reminded about what America is all
about. We go through tough times, but we bounce back. And the reason
we bounce back is because we look out for one another and we don’t leave
anybody behind. And so my commitment to the people on this block, the people in
this community, and the people of this state is that that same spirit will carry
over all the way through until our work is done.
Recovery
and Cleanup: Recovery
and cleanup in the wake of Hurricane Sandy has now started along much of the
East Coast. As survivors of the storm begin to deal with the aftermath of the
giant storm, people across the country are asking what they can do to offer aid
to their fellow Americans, and the federal government remains committed to
providing all available resources to support affected areas, as directed by President
Obama.
We've

looking for, whether you want to get help, or get involved in the recovery
process.
On
Wednesday, President Obama visited Hurricane Sandy survivors in New Jersey and
spoke about the recovery ahead.
In
times of crisis, Americans look out for one another. Find out how you can help

While
more work remains to be done, today’s employment report provides further
evidence that the U.S. economy is continuing to heal from the wounds inflicted
by the worst downturn since the Great Depression.

alongside FEMA officials and the American Red Cross, addressed the nation and
federal agencies on emergency preparedness and recovery, and visited with some
of those affected by the storm.

Two
days after Hurricane Sandy made landfall in southern New Jersey,President Obama was on handto witness the
devastation, comfort residents, and pledge the full support of the federal
government in the recovery effort.
The
President and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie surveyed the effects of the
hurricane from Marine One, and then walked the streets of Brigantine, a town
near Atlantic City. The two leaders also visited a community center now serving
as a shelter for displaced residents.
As
recovery and clean up begins along much of the East Coast, we know that people
across the country are asking what they can do to offer to aid their fellow
Americans.
